Physiologic function of individuals with impairment, disability, pain, or a limited ability to perform an activity.
Physical therapy is a form of treatment that utilizes physical agents, such as exercise and manual therapy techniques, to improve mobility, decrease pain and dysfunction and increase strength. The goal of physical therapy is to help patients regain function after an injury or illness. Physical therapy can be used for a variety of conditions and injuries, including:
Muscle strains
Joint injuries Physical therapists are trained to assess and treat patients with a wide range of conditions, including orthopedic injuries, sports injuries, spinal cord injuries, stroke rehabilitation, and geriatric care.
Lower back pain
Lower back pain is very common. Many people experience lower back pain at least once in their lifetime. In fact, about 80% of people have back pain at some point in their life. Back pain can occur for a number of reasons, including injuries and poor posture. However, the majority of lower back pain goes away on its own, or with mild treatment. Some tips to prevent back pain include: maintaining a healthy weight; eating fruits and vegetables; staying active; avoiding smoking; and reducing stress.
Neck pain
Neck pain can last from days to years, depending on the cause. Common causes include osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis, herniated disc, pinched nerve, poor posture, tumors and other health conditions. Neck pain can also result from an injury. Some of the most common causes are:
- Poor posture can cause neck pain, especially if you spend a lot of time hunched over a computer screen.
- Referred pain occurs when your brain misinterprets where it feels pain, such as when your back hurts but the cause is actually in your neck or shoulder.
Joint pain from osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune condition. It can develop in any joint, but most commonly affects the small joints of the hands and feet. Most people experience mild to moderate pain. Treatment for rheumatoid arthritis may include medications, other therapies, and self-care.
Pain related to sports injuries and overuse
Physical therapy is often used by athletes before and after a sports injury. It can also be helpful for people who are experiencing pain or stiffness as a result of ageing. Physical therapists work closely with patients to develop an individualized treatment plan that focuses on improving mobility, decreasing pain and dysfunction and increasing strength.
