Bowel Movement and blood – an age related evaluation

The detection of blood during bowel movement is always worrying. But there are differences in younger and older ages.

Bowel Movement and blood an age related evaluation

In younger people blood is often a symptom of anal fissure, anal thrombosis (“external hemorrhoids”) or inflammatory bowel diseases. The anal fissure is associated with painful defecation and blood; the anal thrombosis starts with pain, before blood occurs after spontaneous bursting. The inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn’s disease and Colitis are accompanied with diarrhea and multiple bowel movements.

With growing age Hemorrhoids are more and more occurring; their bleeding is mostly pain free. Another serious disease has the same symptoms, The Bowel Cancer.

Bowel Cancer is on the second place of all cancers affecting Men and Women. The slow development of this cancer starts with a small polyp and takes several years. These Polyps are growing in the Bowel space and are easy accessible by a Colonoscopy, an endoscopic inspection of the bowel. A detected Polyp can be removed and investigated. Visible blood is a late Symptom of the Bowel Cancer, that’s why a screening Colonoscopy after the age of 40 years is a standard recommendation.

All in all the symptom of blood in relation to the bowel movement should be taken seriously and investigated by a specialist.
