They are made up of muscle and fibrous tissue and can vary in size, ranging from small and undetectable to large enough to distort the shape of the uterus. While many women with uterine fibroids experience no symptoms, others may experience heavy or prolonged periods, pelvic pain or pressure, frequent urination, constipation, or infertility.   Uterine fibroids are typically diagnosed through imaging tests, such as ultrasounds or MRI, and treatment options may include medications, minimally invasive procedures, or surgery, depending on the size and location of the fibroids and the severity of symptoms.
Some women with uterine fibroids may not experience any symptoms at all, while others may have symptoms that vary depending on the size, number, and location of the fibroids. Some common symptoms of uterine fibroids include:  
  1. Heavy or prolonged menstrual periods: This is one of the most common symptoms of uterine fibroids. Women with fibroids may experience bleeding that lasts for more than 7 days, or bleeding that is so heavy that they need to change pads or tampons frequently.
  2. Pelvic pain or pressure: Fibroids can cause pain or pressure in the pelvic area, lower back, or thighs. This pain may be dull or sharp and may worsen during menstruation.
  3. Urinary problems: Fibroids can cause frequent urination or difficulty emptying the bladder.
  4. Constipation: Fibroids can cause constipation or other bowel problems by putting pressure on the rectum.
  5. Infertility or miscarriage: In some cases, fibroids can interfere with fertility or increase the risk of miscarriage.
  6. Enlarged abdomen: Large fibroids can cause the uterus to enlarge, leading to a visibly larger abdomen.

What are the treatment options for fibroids?

Hysterectomy is often recommended for women who have large or multiple fibroids, or who have completed their family and no longer wish to have children. Hysterectomy can be performed using open surgery or laparoscopy.
    3. Uterine artery embolization (UAE): This is a minimally invasive procedure that cuts off the blood supply to the fibroids, causing them to shrink. UAE is often recommended for women who have large or multiple fibroids and want to avoid surgery.
    4. Endometrial ablation: This is a procedure that removes the lining of the uterus and can be used to treat submucosal fibroids that are located within the uterine cavity.
    5. Laparoscopic fibroid removal: This is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that removes fibroids through small incisions in the abdomen. Laparoscopic fibroid removal is often recommended for women who have large or multiple fibroids.
 
  1. Other procedures: New treatment for fibroids without surgery, such as magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound surgery (MRgFUS) and radiofrequency ablation, use ultrasound or heat to destroy fibroids without surgery.
